A host starts a live podcast session.
Multiple guests are invited to join.
The podcast must not start until all required guests have joined.
Guests may join at different times.
Everything happens concurrently (over the network, different threads).

Each guest joining is an independent task.
The host starting the podcast depends on all guests being present.

Host might check “are guests ready?” while guests are still joining.

- Host checks → sees only 2 guests → waits
- Guest 3 joins immediately after → host never notices

Solutions

Naive Solution (Looks Correct, Actually Broken)

🧠 Naive Idea

Keep a counter of guests who have joined.
Host checks the counter.
If count == required guests → start podcast.

Why This Fails (Concurrency Problems)

🚨 Problem 1: Busy Waiting (CPU Waste)

Host thread spins endlessly checking the condition.
Wastes CPU cycles.
Scales terribly.

🚨 Problem 2: Visibility Problem

Even worse — this may never work.

Why?

joinedGuests is not volatile
Host thread may never see updates from guest threads.

📌 Host might loop forever, even after all guests join.

🚨 Problem 3: Race Condition

Two guests join at the same time:

Thread A reads joinedGuests = 1
Thread B reads joinedGuests = 1
Thread A writes joinedGuests = 2
Thread B writes joinedGuests = 2  ❌

One join is lost.

🚨 Problem 4: Podcast May Start Multiple Times

If multiple host threads exist:

All see joinedGuests == requiredGuests
All start the podcast

💥 Multiple starts = disaster.

Why This Still Fails

🚨 Problem 1: Host Holds the Lock

Host enters hostStarts() and holds the lock.
Guests can never enter guestJoins().
Deadlock-like behavior.

🚨 Problem 2: Still Busy Waiting

CPU burn continues.
No proper waiting mechanism.

Realization (Key Insight)

We don’t want:

Polling
Spinning
Manual checking

We want:

Host sleeps until the last guest arrives, then wakes up exactly once.

This is a coordination problem, not a data-sharing problem.

Correct Mental Model

Each guest says:
“I’m ready.”
Host says:
“Wake me up when everyone is ready.”

This maps perfectly to:
